Los Angeles' newest haberdashery, The Millinery Guild, opened this fall on Beverly, bringing quirky hatter Susan "Montez" Murphy’s avante-garde, handcrafted creations to the Westside.
The light, bright and airy space stocks Murphy's own vintage-inspired in-house line, Montez, which she crafts using wooden hat blocks circa the '30s and '40s, plus toppers by Cristina de Prada, Su WeHa, Bijou Van Ness and Carpe Diem.
And, while most folks come by the shop looking to replicate the adorned look of a certain sapphire-bedazzled newly-crowned princess, according to Murphy, anything goes when it comes to headwear, just as long as you're not headed to the movies.

The Rad Hatter The Millinery Guild Opens on Beverly

There are many words to describe Susan Murphy’s hats,
but “dull” is not one of them.
Her new Beverly Boulevard boutique, The Millinery
Guild,specializes in eccentric, over-the-top headwear
(an all-too-raresight outside British aristocracy and
Munchkinland).
Inside the all-white jewel box space, you’ll find hand
craftedtoppers that range from whimsical (felt fedoras
with bird appliques) to WTF? (a mousetrap headband
with a wedge ofrhinestoned cheese) by established
labels such asCristina de Prada, Su WeHa, and Carpe Diem.
Then there’s Murphy’s own line, Montez, with
avant-garde creations like a mouth-shaped straw beret dangling a cigarette. She often uses
wooden hat blocks from the 1930s and 1940s, so even custom orders have a vintage twist.
Want to flex your own millinery muscle? Murphy plans to teach beginners’ workshops at
Hands-On 3rd.
We’re brimming with excitement.

3 Millinery Workshops with

Milliner for the films “The Duchess”, “Harry Potter” and “The Other Boleyn Girl” to name a few
Workshop 1- “Henry VIII and his Wives and Daughters”
Using buckram as the base and both traditional millinery hand sewing techniques and modern machine work, you will create at least one Tudor hat (or as they called it “bonnet”) or headpiece” similar to those seen in the movies “Henry VIII”, “Elizabeth”, “The Other Boleyn Girl”, “The Tudors”, etc” and in portraits of the mid to late 16th century. The class includes your supplies for two hats or headdresses covered with silk or velvet and lunch each day. If you wish, you may also bring 1½ yards of an outer fabric of your choice. A basic sewing kit will be needed (shears, pins, tape measure, thimble, tailor’s chalk)

Workshop 2- “Cheri” and “Titanic”- Edwardian and Teens Wire Frame Ladies Hats
Using millinery wire and lace or sheer fabric, you will create at least one Edwardian/Teens hat similar to hats seen in the movies “Cheri”, “Titanic”, “Howard’s End”, and the classic My Fair Lady”. The class includes your supplies for two hats with wire frames covered with silk organza or lace and lunch each day. If you wish, you may also bring 2 yards of an outer fabric of your choice. A basic sewing kit will be needed (shears, pins, tape measure, thimble, tailor’s chalk)

Workshop 3- Topsy Turvey-19th Century Straw Braid Hats & Bonnets
Using fine straw braid, you will create two different bonnets/hats from 1870-1900. Both hand sewing and machine techniques will be taught (sewing machines will be available. You are also welcome to bring your own machine.) All of your supplies to complete the 2 hats will be included along with lunch each day. A basic sewing kit will be needed (shears, pins, tape measure, thimble, tailor’s chalk)

While the jewelry at bridal market veered toward big, bold, and extravagant, the accessories—hats, headpieces, and bags—proved to be more playful and coquettish. Soft pastels and feathery details were mixed in among more daring pieces, like hair combs with Lady Gaga-esque oversized bows and whimsical polka dot-covered hats. Some of my favorites included the superchic hats and hair accessories by Leah C. About the Exhibition

Through the ages, men, women, and children have adorned their heads for a variety of reasons. At times, hats were purely utilitarian providing protection from the elements. Over the years, hats evolved beyond their functional purpose to become an essential accessory that indicated the wearer’s economic standing, social status, or fashion savvy.

The popularity, size, and shape of hats has changed measurably over time. In past decades, a respectable lady or gentleman would not have ventured outdoors without one. The design of women’s hats has been influenced by hairstyles, haute couture, new materials, and even the popular use of the parasol. The impact of men’s hat designs – such as the top hat and the fedora – has also been remarkable.

The exhibition Mad for Hats! explores women’s hats as social and fashion phenomena. More than 100 hats and related photographs, selected from the Museum’s collections, showcase the various materials, styles, and shapes of ladies' hats from the 1860s to the 1960s.

About the Curators:

Elizabeth A. Smalley, M.D. - Dr. Smalley is a physician and partner at Health Care Partners in Duarte. She also serves on the Museum's Board of Trustees and is chair of the Museum's Collections Committee.

Suzanne Ehrmann - Ms. Ehrmann is the owner of Designs by Suzzanne jewelry. She also volunteers for the Collections department at the Museum, where she works with the Costumes & Textiles Collection.

Janet Kadin - Mrs. Kadin is a retired educator and long-time volunteer with the Museum, where she serves as Volunteer Council President and as a member of Collections Committee.

For those interested in beginning hat making and blocking, these are workshops you will not want to miss. The exact locations will be announced later however, you may register for various cities by going to the registration page on Kays Site Here Once the locations have been established, I will notify you. At that time you will have two weeks to submit your registration fees through PayPal; a secure website. All workshops are $350.00, and limited to ten students each location. Some supplies are included in the fees.

The last class in this series is Hat blocking, also known as “Men Make Hats Too”. During this workshop, participants will learn proper techniques for blocking, wiring and completing felt or straw hat bodies. They will also have the opportunity to learn leather and other material blocking. During this workshop students will block no less than one felt and one straw hat of their choice. Some outside classroom work may be required depending on each student’s pace.

Men are encouraged to attend this workshop. However, anyone wishing to learn felt, straw, leather or other material blocking is welcome. To all those men who like hats and thought hat making was for women only, THINK AGAIN!!!!! The fact is even though many of today’s hatters are women; men originally dominated the hat making industry. Their livelihood depended on their millinery skills, which consisted of hard work and physical strength.

The turbans didn't make the magazine but Allison's 'Bloom' hat in white landed on the head of the Editor-in-Chief instead. Fabulous!

about allison

Allison Parson is inspired by beautiful fabrics and trims, and the mid-century modern decorative arts that she surrounds herself within her Los Angeles home and studio. She has studied art history and interior design, and her love of sewing, art background and design school all came together when she decided to pursue her millinery career.

A self-taught seamstress, Allison has sewn since childhood. Her first hat design was a whim, as she loved to take on new sewing challenges. She thought “I’ve made nearly everything else, why not make a hat?” With inspiration from past designers like Bes-Ben and Lilly Dache', some scraps from her fabric stash and pieces of trim that caught her eye, she began to experiment with design and placement. Through trial and error, she developed her original pattern and concept for her designs. Each flower, ribbon, or thread embellishment is sewn by hand with a great attention to detail.

LOS ANGELES, CA/September 14, 2010. On October 15, 2010 The Millinery Guild of Southern California will present their Spring 2011 millinery collections titled “Hollywood Legacy” in conjunction with LA’s Fashion Week. The event will take place in the Millennium Biltmore’s Crystal Ballroom, site of the 1942 Oscars, starting at 7:00 PM.

“Hollywood Legacy” will feature members of the guild including Mondo Guerra who is a current contestant on Project Runway. In addition to the Millinery Guilds members showing will include established Millinery designers Anita Hopkins, Louise Green, Ignatius Creegan, Rehn Dudugkian and up and coming designer Gladys Tamez. In addition, a tribute is planned for Mrs.Eloise King – a master milliner who has been teaching designers the art of Couture Millinery for over 40 years in and around Los Angeles. She is also a valued teacher within the Los Angeles School District.

There will be a Silent Auction of Designer Gold Jewelry Piece by Antonella Pellegrini to support The Diva Foundation.

The Millinery Guild of Southern California (http://millineryguildsocal.com) was founded in January of 2010 by S. "Montez" Murphy, who has designed hats for 20 years. The mission of the guild is to foster interest in hats, millinery and hat wearing. This is achieved through lectures, instructional workshops and a variety of classes in all aspects of traditional and contemporary millinery. The guild also sponsors charity events, sales and demonstrations that enable our members to enhance their skills and share their expertise through public sales and exhibits.

The Millinery Guild is proud to have Subaru as the presenting sponsor for this season’s show. Subaru has a commitment to fostering strong relationships with local communities by recognizing non-profit organizations working to better their communities. The guild is honored to have Subaru as a partner as we look forward to featuring the 2011 Legacy during the show. The Legacy holds the highest crash test rating from the NHTSA (five out of five stars).

The Millinery Guild Members will be participating in "Fashion Walk" Downtown Los Angeles February 18th 2010 5:30pm-9:00pm. There will be an eclectic assortment of Hats,Accessories and Clothing from Local Artisans and Shops. There will be tons of things to buy and want, you won't leave empty handed.

Our Member Anita Hopkins participated in a "Fiber Feast Show" in Long Beach along with Cafe Crochet. Here are two quotes from Anita that describe her perfectly!
